How the savings goal calculator works

The calculator starts with your current savings, adds estimated monthly interest and then adds your monthly contribution. It repeats the process until the target is reached. The final contribution is reduced when only a smaller amount is needed.

The annual interest rate is optional and stays inside Additional fields so the first view remains simple. Use 0% for a cash-only plan or a conservative estimate based on the savings account you expect to use.

A savings goal works best when the monthly amount is realistic. A slightly slower plan you can maintain is usually more useful than an aggressive target that breaks after a few months.

Example savings goal

Starting with $5,000, saving $500 per month toward a $20,000 goal and estimating 4% annual interest produces a timeline of about 28 months. Under this model, future contributions total roughly $13,863 and estimated interest contributes about $1,137.

Goal$20,000
Current savings$5,000
Monthly contribution$500

Frequently asked questions

Should I include interest?

Use 0% when you want a conservative contribution-only estimate. If the money will stay in an interest-bearing account, use a cautious current rate and remember that it can change.

What if I already reached the goal?

The calculator asks for a target greater than current savings. If the goal is complete, set the next milestone or review where the money should be held.

Does this account for taxes or fees?

No. The estimate does not subtract account fees or taxes on interest. Consider those separately when they are relevant.

How can I reach the goal sooner?

Increase the monthly contribution, add occasional windfalls, reduce the target only when appropriate, or use an account with a competitive rate without taking unsuitable risk.
